Treat and Protect

A porcelain dental crown placed over a tooth following treatment for physical trauma or tooth decay reinforces the external structure and protects it from further damage. Prompt treatment for an infection with a root canal can oftentimes prevent the need for extraction.

Our CEREC System Provides Same-Day Crowns

Midnight Sun Dental features the revolutionary in-office CEREC system, which allows our dentists to design, fabricate, and place a permanent restoration in a single appointment at our Eagle River and Anchorage, AK, dentist's offices. You don't have to worry about messy and unpleasant impressions, as this technology uses a digital scanner to take incredibly detailed images that are then used to design your new porcelain dental crown. You can also skip the temporary crown since you will leave our office with a permanent crown already attached. The CEREC system allows you to save money on lab fees and not worry about multiple office visits while enjoying world-class results.

Paying for Dental Crowns

The cost of your dental crown treatment will vary depending on certain factors, such as your choice of materials. While high-quality dental porcelain can be used to make crowns in-house, crowns made from more premium materials such as IPS e.max® and zirconia must be crafted offsite. Let's take a closer look at how insurance and financing can help you budget for a crown:

Dental Insurance

Your insurance coverage will vary depending on your provider and plan, but most insurances cover at least part of the cost of dental crowns. Our friendly staff can help you determine how much your plan will cover and provide a personalized quote during a consultation.

Third-Party Financing

For any out-of-pocket expenses, we also accept financing through CareCredit. Patients can apply for CareCredit payment plans to break their costs into affordable monthly payments. Based on your credit score, they offer low-interest and interest-free plans.

Receive a Personalized Quote During a Consultation With Dr. Latteier

We do not want the cost of treatment to become a barrier between you and a functional smile. Your well-being is our top priority, which is why we accept most insurance plans and take financing options to make our treatments more accessible to everyone in Greater Anchorage. Dr. Latteier or Dr. Menard can provide a personalized quote after an initial exam, and then we can discuss your options for making the beautiful smile of your dreams a reality. Keep in mind that by offering same-day crowns, we help patients avoid the need to pay for temporary crowns, lowering the overall cost of treatment.

Same-Day Crown Treatment Timeline

Thanks to our CEREC technology, a same-day crown can repair your tooth in just one visit.

Treatment

Dr. Latteier or Dr. Menard will treat the trauma or decay affecting your tooth. Following treatment, he will reshape the remaining tooth structure to prepare it for your new crown.

Digital Impressions

Using a small intraoral camera, your dentist will take precise 3D images of your teeth. An added benefit of digital impressions is that these images can be stored and referred to in the future to monitor the success of your treatment.

Design

The 3D digital impressions will be sent to our CEREC software, allowing your dentist to design a restoration that will fit perfectly with your surrounding teeth to give your smile a natural appearance.

Fabrication

Once he is happy with your new virtual crown, your dentist will send the design to our in-office computer-controlled milling machine. Fabricating a crown from a porcelain block takes anywhere from four to 20 minutes.

Fitting

Your dentist will test fit your new crown to ensure you are happy with the appearance and function of your new bite. He can make any necessary adjustments from the dental chair while you wait.

Placement

Once both you and our dentist are happy with the results, he will permanently affix your new crown with dental cement. Thanks to our CEREC system, you will leave our office with a fully restored smile.

Same-Day Crowns vs. Lab-Made Crowns

While a CEREC crown from our Greater Anchorage offices means fast, quality treatment, there are also benefits to a traditional lab-made crown. Crowns made in a lab can be fabricated from a variety of materials, meaning the final result can be more durable, lifelike, or customized.

We also use a local lab, so turnaround times are faster than average, but lab-made crowns will always take longer to create than CEREC crowns and will be more expensive. You'll also have to wear a temporary crown made from resin to protect your tooth while the lab technicians create your permanent restoration.

The type of crown that's best for you will depend on your goals and budget, but our dentists will help guide you to the correct treatment.

Recovery

Some patients may experience mild discomfort and tooth sensitivity following the procedure, but these symptoms can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication or specialized toothpaste. Patients may also want to eat softer foods and avoid chewing with the crowned side of the mouth until the discomfort subsides.

Are You Missing a Tooth? Consider an Implant-Supported Crown

Missing teeth make it difficult to chew certain foods, smile with confidence, and enunciate clearly. Dental implants support crowns, dental bridges, and dentures to restore any degree of tooth loss.

We aim to be a one-stop shop for our patients, and our offices serving Greater Anchorage, AK, can place implants and secure dental restorations without referring you elsewhere. If you're missing a tooth, we invite you to explore this option.

"A single crown is the most common restorative procedure. Approximately 2.3 million implant-supported crowns are made in the United States each year."

– According to the American College of Prosthodontists

Dental Crowns FAQ

There is no substitute for consulting a dentist about crowns, dental bridges, and other restorative solutions, but we understand that if you are waiting for your appointment, you probably have many questions. Here are answers to a few of the most common questions that our patients ask about dental crowns:

Is it painful to have a crown placed on your tooth?

No. Our staff will thoroughly numb the area during your treatment using local anesthesia for a virtually painless experience. The anesthesia usually lasts for several hours after the procedure. You may experience some mild discomfort once it subsides, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. We also understand that many patients feel anxious in the dentist's chair. Midnight Sun Dental will be glad to make accommodations that will make your visit as calm and beneficial as possible, so don't be afraid to let us know what will help you remain comfortable under our care.

Are traditional crowns better than same-day crowns?

No; which option is best for your needs purely depends on your own preferences and situation. Some dentists prefer to work with traditional crowns, but Dr. Latteier can match the high quality of traditional crowns using same-day CEREC technology. While same-day crowns have more limitations when it comes to materials, you can count on a durable and natural-looking result no matter which type of crown you choose.

Will insurance cover a dental implant-supported crown?

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth roots that can support dental crowns, dental bridges, and dentures to replace lost teeth from the root to the chewing surface. While most insurance plans will contribute to the cost of dental crowns, basic insurance does not cover dental implants. Our staff will work directly with your insurance provider to secure the best possible coverage for your crown, and we can help you explore financing options that can make dental implants a comfortable fit for your budget.
